Found on the Ground

Saturday, November 16th, 2002

I have a photo album that contains all the pictures, notes, and letters I have found on the ground over the years. Here is the latest addition to my album:

Fig 1: I would love to see the Big Chill-type movie made about this group of people twenty years later.

I found this fine specimen last Friday outside the Tower Records across from the Hillsdale mall. It’s amazing how many pictures there are on the ground if one just looks. When I was living and working in San Francisco, I would find one every month or so. Maybe I should scan them all and put them on line.

I have this idea of breaking into computers that have already been compromised by Nimbda or Code Red and stealing pictures from their hard drives. My Apache logs record at least 10-20 machines each day that try to spread these worms. Maybe I shouldn’t do crap like that now that I’m working for a computer security company, but the idea of an album of photos I found on-line to compliment my album of photos found on the ground is very appealing to me.

I didn’t always walk around looking down. When I first moved to Berkeley thirteen years ago I walked like a normal person from Ohio would: looking straight ahead and giving a slight nod when making eye contact with someone approaching.

But a few times walking down Telegraph Avenue cured me of that. Too many goddamn freaks. Violating the Code of the Slight Nod, these freaks would start talking to me or even follow me for a while.

Also, I would sit in cafes looking like the rube that I was, smiling and looking around and generally saying, “Aw, shucks!” with my body language. People would sit down at my table and lay their weird energy on me or try to sell me their shitty poetry. (Why is “the bubble lady” memorialized in a mural rather than considered a public nuisance?) The first few times it was kind of interesting. Then it was not.

Eventually, I learned that one has to fight for one’s right to smoke and read and drink coffee undisturbed. But on the bright side, I have a photo album of context-less pictures and letters.

Misc notes:
1. Memo to spas out there: Don’t give D. a crappy facial or she will only tip $10. Meghann won’t even tip!

2. Mad Magazine, of all humor publications, totally skewered The Onion. As we used to say in high school: “Oooooh! Burnnnn!” It is true that it’s not too hard to reverse engineer their humor, but it’s still very funny.

3. I went to the music store on 4th in San Mateo, and the guy working there had no idea what a vibraslap is. That’s a sin. They are getting none of my business. I will try Gelb Music next. Then I will buy one on-line.

4. I think that Bun II is going to be taken out via C-section the week of Christmas. Adding to the excitement of this blessed event are goddamn threats from goddamn terrorists against San Francisco hospitals that week.
